SEO update: Google drops the “mobile friendly” tag from mobile search.
Currently when you search Google on a phone the search results tag sites which pass the mobile friendly test. This will soon be dropped, as 85% of sites pass the test.
The mobile-friendly test results continue to be a ranking signal, so friendly sites will still tend to appear higher up the search results.
Google started giving preference to mobile-friendly sites 2 years ago, and it’s worked: almost all sites pass the test. That’s a win for Google, and for phone users.
Google are also going to start penalising sites where pop-ups make it hard to access the content, which is another win for users.
